Dishwasher_

Dishwasher_ are the latest disciples of yet another new wave of talent in the fertile Belgian groove and jazz scene.

Werend Van Den Boscche (saxophone, synths, fx) | Louise van den Heuvel (el. bass) | Arno Grootaers (drums)

Dishwasher_'s acclaimed self-titled debut album from 2023 was a time capsule of collective energy: recorded in one breath, fuelled by weekly jams and the quiet concentration of lockdown. The follow up, out since October 31st 2025 on on Amsterdam-based label DOX Records, takes a different path: unlike the spontaneous energy of the debut, Anemoia was built on ideas that first grew in isolation. It was only in the rehearsal room that those ideas were broken open, distorted and rebuilt.

A quest, but all the more satisfying for it when those divergent worlds merge into a whole. The result? Jazz flows into krautrock, new wave rubs up against Irish folk and minimalist motifs grow into vast, modulating landscapes. The sound palette is warm and analogue, yet strange and otherworldly at the same time. It moves somewhere between memory and hallucination, precisely the peculiar feeling implied in the title. Taken from The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows, Anemoia means nostalgia for a time you never experienced.

At first, that may sound a bit distant, but it lurks in every generation: teenagers who dress like it's the 2000s, the return of VHS aesthetics to feel the 90s, thirty-somethings who cherish a warm longing for the 80s that they only know through old television images. Anemoia translates that into sound: warm, analogue synths, grainy pedal effects reminiscent of worn-out films and retro games, and melodies that linger in your head like half-formed memories. The record exudes a nostalgia that is as comforting as it is alienating.

Dishwasher_ came into being in 2019. After immediately diving fully into the live circuit, the band won some leading Belgian band competitions: Sound Track in 2021 and Jazz Talent Ghent (by Gent Jazz Festival) in 2022. The trio played some 60 shows at renowned venues across Europe and the UK since their inception, including Gent Jazz Festival, BIRD Rotterdam (NL), Fifty Lab, De Kreun, De Roma (AMOR), Zomerparkfeest Venlo (NL), Südtirol Jazz Festival (IT), Edinburgh Jazz Festival (UK), Transition Festival Utrecht (NL), New Colours Festival Gelsenkirchen (DE), Absolutely Free Festival, So What's Next (NL), Mondriaan Jazz Festival (NL), The Hug & Pint (UK), Off The Cuff London (UK), SWN Festival Cardiff (UK), ...

“ (…) c’est ainsi que le jazz évolue, se gorge d’autres sons, d’autres rythmes, harmonies, mélodies comme une éponge. Et offre une musique qui ne ressemble plus à aucune autre. C’est la belle surprise de c et album : Dishwasher nous emmène dans d’autres territoires.” ★★★

Le Soir (BE)

“Soms klinkt de muziek als jazzrock op speed en moet u allicht aan Stuff denken – bij veel nummers is het moeilijk stilzitten. Dishwasher_ serveert een verleidelijke mix van jazz en electronica.” ★★★★

De Standaard (BE)

“Other than their unflagging energy, what I find most striking about their music is the extent to which electronic effects and processing are so stitched-in.”

London Jazz News (UK)

“De Gentse groep debuteert met veel esprit en energie. In de improvisaties vloeien jazz, electronica, grooves en Afrikaanse of Midden-Oosterse motieven samen. (…) Een riante trip." ★★★★
