Steiger

If their five releases prove anything, it's that Steiger is not just a band, but a continuous work-in-progress.
For about ten years now, Steiger has been casting itself as one of the most idiosyncratic bands on the Belgian jazz and improv scene. Together, pianist Gilles Vandecaveye-Pinoy (Peenoise, PJDS, Uma Chine ...), bassist Kobe Boon (mòs Ensemble, The Milk Factory, Kreis, ...) and drummer Simon Raman (Ivy Falls, Uma Chine, mòs Ensemble, ...) released three albums and an EP, which received rave reviews from press at home and abroad.
In 2017, Steiger won the Young Jazz Talent competition at Gent Jazz and were artist-in-residence at Vooruit Arts Centre, VOLTA and DeSingel, among others. They stepped onto the Belgian jazz scene with ‘And Above All’ (2017, El Negocito Records) to follow up in 2018 with ‘Give Space’ (Sdban Ultra).
After a few years of silence, a period during which the musicians focused on other projects, the trio is very much looking forward to coming together again for a fourth full album, to be released in on October 17th 2025.
Whereas they worked around space for their second full album (Give Space, 2017), their next record 'The New Lady Llama' (2021) and EP ‘Brick Smoke Basement’ (2021) was more of a symbiosis between influences from electronica and acoustic music. Their brand new album, 'Mowglowski's First Take', (17.10.2025) brings all their experiences and experiments together in a fresh and organic way.
The joy of playing and the sense of making music together is very much audible on their new album. In collaboration with producer Frederik Segers (Stadt, Fulco, De Beren Gieren, Black Flower, ...) they came up with a dynamic, idiosyncratic record that is very accessible. The music radiates a joie de vivre with a good dose of humour, but does not shy away from darkness either. The lovely, controlled versus the wild and free.
Steiger embraces the great contrasts, taking the listener into their unique musical universe.

Press
"Het Gentse trio Steiger stouwt zijn vierde plaat vol wonderlijk experiment: Simon Raman, Kobe Boon en Gilles Vandecaveye-Pinoy klooien en kliederen grijnzend met klanken, ritmewissels en geinige muzikale knipoogjes. Onheilspellende exotica en kromgebogen jazz wisselen elkaar af, opgesmukt met creepy elektronica.”
HUMO (BE)
"Met The new lady Llama slaat het Gentse ‘jazztrio’ Steiger nieuwe wegen in."
De Standaard (BE)
"Een opwindende plaat boordevol ongebreidelde nieuwsgierigheid voor donkere grooves, ondersteund door een sensibele lyriek die afgewisseld wordt met opruiende passages en weelderige melodielijnen."
Klara (BE)
"It's all well-crafted stuff and none of this feels whimsical, more deliberately puzzling – possibly for the musicians themselves as much as anyone."
