Echoes of Zoo

A quartet delivering a unique blend of energetic psych jazz, Middle Eastern microtonal melodies and West-African rhythms

Nathan Daems (saxophone, Nyabinghi drum) | Bart Vervaeck (el. guitar) | Lieven Van Pée (el . bass) | Falk Schrauwen (drums)

The Belgian global/jazz/psych-supergroup Echoes of Zoo, uniting members of Black Flower, Compro Oro & De Beren Gieren, have finished their third full album — set for release early October 2026 via Rebel Up x Zephyrus Records.

Active since 2018, the band came onto the scene with the EP First Provocations’ (2019) followed by the LP's ‘BREAKOUT’ (2021) and ’Speech of Species’ (2023). Heavily inspired by the fascinating world of animals, then linked to concepts of freedom, ecology and political awareness both on a conceptual as on a compositional level, this quartet delivers a sound of their very own: a unique variant of jazz that’s punky, psychedelic, dubby and especially very groovy.

Echoes of Zoo is now back withCollective Intelligence— an album that grooves like a pack on a mission. Inspired by the clever coordination of animals, these tracks celebrate the magic that happens when individuals move as one. Drawing from the intelligence of swarms, flocks, and ecosystems, the record invites listeners to rethink how we, as humans, might face global challenges together. Deep African grooves and wild oriental melodies, all tangled up with Western twists and turns. Music that feels both primal and futuristic. Every beat buzzes with urgency and curiosity, inviting us humans to dance our way toward smarter, shared solutions. Collective Intelligence is not just a listening experience, but a call for awareness, connection, and shared responsibility.

Acclaimed by amongst others MOJO, JazzWise, Songlines, Stereogum and UKVIBE, Echoes of Zoo played over 60 shows including WOMEX (Portugal), Rec-Beat (Brazil), Roadburn (The Netherlands), MENT (Slovenia), Ancienne Belgique, Flagey, BOZAR, Brosella Festival and many more in Belgium.

“The scuzzy funk and Balkan riffology of Bee Jive and untamed thrust of Call Of The Quagga Quagga live up to their titles (…) a restless fusion of West African grooves, ‘60s psychedelia and Gypsy swing.” ★★★★

MOJO (UK)

“It reminds me of Sons Of Kemet; it reminds me of the work of Theon Cross or Nubya Garcia. It has jump-up energy with a fierce rock edge, and the dub effects make it even more compelling.”

Stereogum (USA)

“(…) Nathan Daems certainly has an ear for a sinuous melody and on tacks like the reverb-heavy, dub-wise opener, Bee Jive, he spins a convincing yarn with a touch of the sweet sadness of Ethiopian saxmen such as Getatchew Mekurya.”
